Finding Yourself in the Story of God

Know God's Story and Discover Your Purpose!

Is This You?

Are you a Christian and have found it difficult to discover your purpose? Have you struggled to understand the Bible and often wonder how it applies to your everyday life? Maybe you’re someone who is spiritually inquisitive and have examined the Christian faith, yet find the Bible confusing and fail to see how it matters in “real life”.

Discovering the Story

I have followed Christ for nearly 36 years and for much of this time I’ve served in ministry. For most of my journey I was under the impression the most important thing for a Christian to do was study the Bible. And I became a lover of scripture! So much so that one of my greatest joys is reading and teaching the Bible. It wasn’t until the last few years that I began to see the entire Bible as one comprehensive story. A story with a singular plot line which reveals God’s purposes from Creation to the final “restoration of all things”. It was then I began to see why so many believers and seekers struggle to comprehend the Bible, and also discover their purpose.

The Bigger Picture

Many of our sermons, Bible studies, and discipleship programs often don't connect biblical content to the narrative arc of scripture. They present only a snapshot of the great “cosmic drama” causing many to lose the plot. It is all too common to experience a disconnect between God’s purposes revealed in the Bible and our lives, leading to uncertainty concerning the meaning of life. This has far reaching implications since Christians have a pivotal role in God’s redemptive purposes. We are to join God in the “restoration of all things”. It is my belief that when we see the Bible as a great “cosmic drama” we discover that God invites us to be participants in what He’s doing in the world.

The Power of Stories!

Stories are powerful. Researchers have confirmed that at birth humans think in story terms and studies have shown that we are born wired to search for and to create meaning from story elements. Stories have the ability to take the reader into the world created by the author. The more engaged we become with a story, the more likely we are to embrace the perspectives presented within the story. When it comes to comprehension, stories increase our ability to understand and remember whatever content has been presented.

The Story of God

For these reasons, I've become convinced the better way to make sense of the Bible is when it is framed in "story-form". In doing so, we see the Bible not as a collection of writings by different authors spanning over many years, but the unfolding of God’s great purpose and plan for his creation. It becomes easier to follow the storyline of scripture and discover where and how we fit into this significant story. We are able to connect the dots and fill in the blanks. This has powerful implications for how we choose to live our lives.
